Climate Change and Risks of Instability in the Horn of Africa
Project type
Risk Forecasting
Date
May 2022
As part of a multidisciplinary team, I conducted in-depth analysis on how climate change and governance challenges in the Horn of Africa exacerbate terrorism and instability. My contributions focused on evaluating the role of non-state actors like Al-Shabaab, Daesh (ISIS), and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), and how worsening drought, food insecurity, and ethnic marginalization fuel radicalization and recruitment.
I assessed trends in IED use, regional election interference, and transnational terrorist finance and logistics, drawing from open-source intelligence and security briefings. I also analyzed evolving counterterrorism responses such as the African Union's AMISOM mission and Operation Shujaa in Uganda and the DRC. This work contributed to a broader policy recommendation report on how climate-related stressors intersect with terrorism risks in fragile states.
